Of Endings and New Beginnings
How have you been the whole year, Skinlover?
As 2015 comes to a close, one can’t help but to think of both the good and the bad things that have happened all year round – of trials and triumphs, of laughter and tears. As we welcome the New Year, here are some thoughts to ponder on to have that fresh start for 2016.
Let go.
Attachment is one thing we all have, especially with people and things we hold close and dear to our hearts. However, if these were to bring us pain in the long run, how could we attain the happiness we all aim for? Failures, missed chances, failed relationships in all contexts – we can do away with these as we say goodbye to this year. The process may be long and difficult, yes, but always remember that pain and memories will feel like boiling water poured on you at first, then they will just simmer and one day, you will just wake up and these will no longer bother you at all; the first step is to let go.
Be kind to yourself.
Are you the go-getter type of person or even someone who just wants something so bad? Failures, heartaches and regrets are a few of the demons we have to face in our everyday lives. As we do away with the negative, it is also important to forgive ourselves – we may sometimes think that there are things we could have done differently, but it’s important to take a breather and say, “It’s okay, self, you have done well this year.” Assess what you have done wrong, make a mental note of these (or write them down) and vow to improve yourself – and to forgive yourself and everyone whom you feel has wronged you – to finally have inner peace.
Turn longing into goals.
We may pine and whine for many things to happen in our lives. Sooner or later, frustration starts to kick in and the vicious cycle starts again with us feeling helpless and more frustrated than ever. The question is – have you actually acted upon your longings? You can turn them into actionable goals – if you want a healthier body, start being healthy. If you want a healthier mindset, work on being positive. Make a checklist of your short-term and long-term goals, think of ways you can actually achieve these and see yourself happier as you tick them off your list one by one.
Be firm with your decisions.
There are times when the heart battles with the mind or when we get torn between two very sound options: Should I or should I not do this? I can do this but I can also do that… Which one is the best for me?
Think long and hard when making decisions and do not act out when you are overflowing with emotions leading to irrational and unwise decisions. These burning questions can lead to life-changing moments. Making peace with yourself and your decisions entail that the heart and mind are aligned, thus making it easier to stick to your decisions and not have regrets that can consume you wholly and for a long time.
Aim for beauty inside and outside.
Quoting Franz Kafka:
“Youth is happy because it has the capacity to see beauty. Anyone who keeps the ability to see beauty never grows old.”
Collecting our experiences and seeing the beauty in each of them without favouring or selecting the good over the bad contribute to our well-being – each one of them has key takeaways we can keep for us to better ourselves. Love every experience and see them as integral parts of our growth and beauty. We may have been scarred by some, but we can always heal.
And we can always start afresh.
